16th Century Polish Language Department
The Department, created in 1949 thanks to the initiative of Professor Maria Renata Mayenowa, is composed of two groups: in Toruń and in Wrocław. The supervisor of the editorial works was Professor Franciszek Pepłowski.
So far, 30 volumes of the "Dictionary" (from "a" to "prywowany") have been published. The dictionary's material is a collection of 16th century texts, representing all possible forms of writing: poetry and prose, linear and dialogued, rhetorical, scientific, narrative, etc., of different social origin and a different degree of literariness, coming from all the regions of the Poland of that time. All the words appearing in those texts are studied, except the names of places and persons. The collected archives are composed of 8 million cards (100 000 entries). The materials that have not yet been studied are put in an alphabetical order and made available to researchers.
