The 20th and 21st Century Literary Documentation Department conducts research in documentation and literary history concerning the writers whose main work was written after 1918, and the literary life in that period.
Since the beginning of the Institute's existence, the succeeding members of the Department have published bio-bibliographical dictionaries of contemporary writers: Słownik współczesnych pisarzy polskich [Contemporary Polish Writers Dictionary] series I (vol. 1-4, published 1963-1966) and series II (vol. 1-3; published 1977-1980); since 1994 the Współcześni polscy pisarze i badacze literatury [Contemporary Polish Writers and Literary Scholars] dictionary (vol. 1-8 till 2003, vol. 9-10 in preparation) has been published.
The Department makes available unpublished bibliographical materials, among others the bibliography of the contents of certain periodicals of the period between the wars and the typescript of Kronika życia literackiego 1944-1969 [Chronicle of Literary Life in the years 1944-1969]. .
Also, individual research is conducted on writers' biographical and bibliographical monographs; among others, the monographs of: Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński, Władysław Broniewski, Leon Kruczkowski, Maria Kuncewiczowa, Aleksander Świętochowski, Gabriela Zapolska, as well as the lexicon on literary groups in Poland in the years 1945-1989 are being prepared. Presently, studies about Maria Dąbrowska, Jan Lechoń and Antoni Słonimski are in preparation.
