Ecce Animalia

Museum of Contemporary Sculpture, Centre of Polish Sculpture in Oronsko
8th  March – 15th June 2014
opening: 8th March, 2 PM

Ecce animalia is an international exhibition focusing on animal subjectivity and individuality as well as the relationships between people and animals.

Animals have functioned in human image-making since prehistoric rock paintings and the earliest carvings on tusks and antlers. That is why they are one of the first subjects in the history of art. In later epochs animals appeared within traditional iconography as symbols, attributes, decorations, landscape elements, in hunting scenes and in still-life paintings. Rarely did they appear because of their importance or for their own sake.

More recently art has undergone a so-called animal turn – and also, more broadly, in culture and society – sometimes related to the notion of posthumanism. A new approach to animals in art which began in the 1960s and 1970s manifested a growing interest in animals as living creatures rather than symbols, a greater number of animal images, and new ways of presenting animals. Artists now engage with issues connected with animal subjectivity, individuality and the complexity of relations between people and other animals. Art participates in the animal studies discourse and – as a part of it – critical analyses of the traditional approach to animals in art, as well as in non-artistic issues.
